Based on Luca Marenzio's Scaldava il sol, first published in Il terzo libro de madrigali a cinque voci (1585), Cantate Domino is a new contrafactum by the arranger, setting selected verses from Psalm 149 to Marenzio's music. Following the tradition of early seventeenth-century contrafacta, the text has been carefully fitted to the original musical framework, with rhythmic adjustments and selective revoicing to accommodate the new text and enhance accessibility for modern ensembles. The familiar Latin text also provides a more accessible alternative to the original Italian madrigal, allowing choirs to experience one of the finest examples of the Italian Renaissance in a sacred context.
